Resident called by professional polling company

7/9/07 -- All indications suggest that a professional polling company has been retained by someone to ascertain the opinions of Middleboro residents about locating a casino here.  A resident who was polled told us that when he asked the pollster they said they were calling from Pennsylvania but weren't allowed to say who they were calling for.

This was an in-depth poll, not the poll conducted by Casino-Facts where a number of residents were called and simply asked if the were pro, con or undecided about a casino.

The questions were wide ranging and included many specific ones seeming aimed at determining which of the town's problems are considered most important: crime, property taxes, budget cuts to the school department, local employment, and need for infra-structure improvement.

There was also a question about whether the respondent trusts the pro-casino position of the fire and police department and of and  the School Committee.

They asked  whether the respondent's position on the casino would effect their vote for selectman.

An interesting question reported was "do you feel that support for the casino is owed the local Native Americans because the land was theirs and was unfairly taken away?"

Unusual for most polls which don't ask for narratives, some of those called were also asked to briefly explain the reason for their position.

We have not been able to determine who has commissioned this poll.
