Wayne Perkins's Remarks Regarding Mashpee Wampanoag Resort-Casino Proposal:“Opportunity or Fiasco”

I have been quiet on this issue since it was proposed, because I wanted to look at all of the potential impacts, to the best of my ability, prior to taking a position that, either way, will affect this town forever. CONTINUED

7/2/07 Rotary opinion 5 or 10 to 1 pro.

Two unscientific polls at the rotary suggest large majority in favor of casino.

We, meaning this webmaster and two adult members of Many Voices of Middleboro (see left) noted people smiling at us as they waved, honked and gave us enthusiastic  thumbs up during Friday rush traffic. We estimated the number of positive responses to our four or five signs to be easily 200. About 20 cars with people with grim or angry  expressions gave us the thumbs down or worse.  Then to double check we went down there the next afternoon when traffic was lighter.  READ MORE

School Committee endorses casino

6/29/07 The School Committee vote on Thursday night  was unanimous to endorse the casino.

School Superintendent Robert M. Sullivan was quoted as follows in The Enterprise “I just spent the last three months eliminating 34 positions. Class sizes have increased to numbers no one should accept That's where my concern really is, it's not with a casino.”

"(the school system)... is in deep trouble.... how much worse can it get than what we've already done?”

“I support the concept of having any industry that can come into Middleboro and be a good neighbor. If the results bring a financial benefit, even better.”

Belanger: School Supt.
 a shallow analyst.

6/29/07 According to an article in The Enterprise, casino opponent and a primary spokesperson the anti-casino group in Middleboro, Mark Belanger, apparently assuming that Dr. Sullivan based his conclusions on just one visit to the home - town of the Mohegan Sun said "going down and visiting one town and one superintendent is such a shallow analysis of the effects of a mega casino.”

Letters to the  Gazette: "Teacher's studies lead her to believe casino will benefit town" by Kathy Ryan
"Casino friend accuses objectors of playing media game well" by Hal Brown

There are facts, but mostly there is speculation, about how a casino will change Middleborough. Let's cut through the dire predictions, fear mongering and outright paranoia, and address the issues.

The purpose of this website is to forthrightly address the controversial issues that have been raised by Middleboro residents about the Mashpee Wampanoag building a major destination resort casino in Middleboro.

We will offer our own opinions about the benefits and drawbacks of having what will probably be the largest resort casino in the world in our town. We do think that, by far, the positives outweigh the negatives. We invite those who are against the citing of a casino here to have a constructive dialogue with us. However we understand that many researchers and thoughtful citizens alike have grave concerns about the effects of gambling casinos on a community.

We will endeavor to offer solutions to potential problems, to help Middleboro residents and officials as well as the Mashpee Wampanoag to head off problems such as an increase in compulsive gambling, traffic snarls and criminal activity before they escalate.

You can read more about what our webmaster, Hal Brown, LICSW, has to say about compulsive gambling here. Hal is a clinical social worker and psychotherapist with 37 years of experience, who has been the director of a mental health center and treated virtually every kind of patient. He was also a reserve police officer for twenty years.

More quotable quotes from ProJo 6/29/07

“This town is vulnerable because it’s in a financial pickle; the town is hurting. It’s been on a poor economic trajectory for quite a long time.”  Eva T. Gaffney, chairwoman of the Chamber of Commerce

“When this casino goes up, it’s going to be there for good and ever, it’s going to change people’s lives forever.” Jean Scarborough, president Cranberry County Chamber of Commerce.

We have to prepare ourselves for the growth of a casino. There are going to be new faces, new tongues, new colors, that are going to show up,” he said. “The casino is going to impact this insular, closed, community.  We’re going to need to learn to do things differently.” Selectman Adam Bond
